I once spent a night in Middlesbrough.
TBF, I didn't give it a fair crack of the whip, as I couldn't see the point of going out. Stayed in B&B and fucked off sharpish in the morning

Anyway, missing a foot passenger ferry in DOVER in the late 80s and having to rough it there was like the ending of a Tarkovsky dystopian sci-fi film where I was the anti-hero clone.

Motherwell is a bleak hole of human despair. I stayed there for one night, and it was GRIM
Thankfully, I managed to stay elsewhere, at Rosebank, on the Clyde. That wasn't so bad, IIRC

Went up to Marske to watch a football match and was looking for a place to have lunch and ended up in Redcar which like Mashed said is fooking dire, so we didn't bother and run the risk of salmonella poisoning!

Kearsley near Bolton was fucking horrible. I did have to stay in Middlesborough for work, the hotel was opposite one of those dodgy sex shops. Was amusing to watch the punters going in and out. I also hated staying in Dundee although the locals amused me.

Hull which has a two storey poundland is somewhat grim.
In the late 80s i got stranded in downtown Redwood city not far from San Francisco
My cousins hire car broke down and we had to stay overnight
everywhere was boarded up and full of zonked out weirdos & the fleapit we stayed in was full of them too.
I just googled the place and it appears there has been some regeneration and several tech companies moved in but i wouldnt be in a rush to return.

There’s 2 halves of Redwood City.
The one you described(perfectly,I might add)and the other the complete polar opposite of what you described!
Definitely a case of staying on the right side of the tracks down there.
